The idea of uniqueness that I was taught was that I am unique in everything I do. This is a great message for high self-esteem, but I don’t think it’s entirely accurate. And besides, there’s more to life than self-esteem.
The thing about uniqueness isn’t that everything I do is special. It doesn’t mean that every attribute about me is something that no one else has. It doesn’t even mean that I’m necessarily the best at anything.
Just because I am unique doesn’t make everything I am or do is unique.
Uniqueness means that I am the only human combination of my interests, abilities, et cetera. While I share every aspect of my life in common with others, I will never share in common every aspect with one person.
There is always someone who is better than I am at anything, but there is no one who is better than I am at everything.
